Our Vulnerability, but God's Covering

There are seasons when we feel completely naked before God. It’s when we get stripped to the bare bones from everything that we have taught ourselves and have perfected hiding behind. These seasons are when God requires us to take the MASK OFF and walk in the transparent truth of who we really are on the inside.

Our faith walk is harder at some points than other simply because we naturally want to bury ourselves into things that are comfortable and familiar. We tend to want to hide our blemishes, our imperfections and conceal all that God (who is Light) desires to bring to the surface. His exposure is never for our harm. It is so things that are destructive in our lives and detrimental to others, are unable to persist any longer.

His exposure is intended to lead us to humility before Him and total repentance, which leads to restoration, which leads to victory and becoming an overcomer!

His seasons of revealing is not for abuse and exploitation (which the world’s culture of exposure is all about), but it is to clothe, to cover and to embrace us and cause us to see our dependent state.

Vulnerability definition:

  • the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.

  • the property of lacking physical or mental strength; liability to failure under pressure or stress or strain.

Expose definition:

  • make (something) visible by uncovering it.

  • reveal the true, objectionable nature of (someone or something).

Look at Adam and Eve in the garden after they sinned. God exposed their deception. He exposed how they had tripped up so badly and yielded themselves to the enemy. He probed Adam, inquiring where did they receive this teaching, this habit, this rebellion. He gave them the revelation of the consequences. They were not ignorant or innocent of knowing what God’s will was. They knew right from wrong, yet they had chosen to be vulnerable to the temptation of Satan and to give in to his suggestions.

Today, we are still living under the consequences of their decision - to listen to the voice of Satan - until we are born again and believe in Jesus Christ.

There is a still small voice of conviction within all of us that knows right from wrong. The moral conviction is there, unless people choose to dim it and silence it.

There is a God-acknowledging and God-longing void within us that was put there for a reason. However, instead of seeking Him so He may fill it, often others things are sought after in hopes that it will "solve the problem".

I image God was disappointed with Adam and Eve's decision, because it was never His will for mankind to live apart from Him and it was His heart’s desire to shield mankind from the knowledge of evil. His word says to shun even the appearance of it because He knows that it is like a parasite that latches on to anyone who will give it an opening.

Even still, despite the shortcoming, even understanding the bigger picture of their choice, with them standing there butt naked and vulnerable, God - in His perfect, unconditional love - created fig leaves for the man and woman and covered their guilt and shame, once they acknowledged what they had done.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

- Genesis 3:8-21

In His purest form, we must remember that God’s love is Agape. Agape love is poured on us and rained down upon us. No matter how far we have drifted, He desires us to turn back in repentance, and He is willing to forgive us and clothe us. We can safely be free and vulnerable with God.

In His Presence He tears down our walls and strongholds that iniquity, guilt, secrecy, and shame have built.

Trust is such a crucial word and it requires action. Trust overcomes our feelings, it tramps our weaknesses under toe. It requires us to lean in, to rely on and to depend on someone else for support and strength. Trust brings peace and it brings patience. Trust in God is more powerful than I think I have ever understood before.

God knows everything about you already.

It does not push Him away.

1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Whatever has left your vulnerable, whatever has been revealed, our God is faithful to forgive us, cover us, clothe us in His righteousness [ right standing with Him] and receive us whenever we turn completely towards Him.

PRAYER: Lord, help us to trust because it is your ability, not ours, to continue on this journey. Help us to overcome distractions, and temptations, and do what you are asking in this time and season. Clothe us in your tender mercies. Cover us in your loving kindness and faithfulness. In Jesus name. Amen.

“The Lord God formed the man from dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” – Genesis 2:7

Until next time,
